My Stomach Cried Out

Good morning everyone! It is Sunday and again, the weather is looking beautiful. Unsurprisingly, I jumped out of bed this morning at 7am, ready to get the day started. I was hoping that since I stayed up later than usual last night, baking and watching King’s Speech, I would be able to sleep in till at least 8am, but who was I kidding?  I was planning on going on a quick run before breakfast but once  heard my tummy rumble (loudly), I knew I had to feed it! Typically, on the weekdays, I wake up and get my butt to the gym by 5am and on these days, I don’t feel the need to eat before my workout. Thus, when I get home from my morning workout routine (around 7 am), I am starving!  Because it is better to eat and drink immediately after a prolonged or high-intensity workout, this protein-PACKED smoothie fits the bill.

Today, I will be introducing my version of the Green Monster. The term “Green Monster” refers to any smoothie/drink that contains green vegetables, but for those of you who don’t prefer the greens, this version of the Green Monster will have you thinking twice! I have experimented with many Green Monster recipes and I have several more versions of the Green Monster I will be showing you shortly! Packed with bananas, spinach, oatmeal, chia, and greek yogurt, this is what I call a “power breakfast!”

I chop up my bananas into small pieces and place them in a plastic zip block bag and freeze them. If you forget to freeze your bananas, you may use ripe bananas, however the texture and consistency of the smoothie will be significantly different.

As you can see, my topping obsession didn’t stop me from even topping my smoothies! Note that you can always experiment with adjusting the measurements I give below and adjust them to your personal liking.

I like to enjoy my smoothies with a bowl and spoon when I add xanthum gum because being a thickener, the gum gives the green monster a soft-freeze-like texture. You can of course drink it out of a normal cup, but I find that the serving size is too large to fit into a coffee cup.

Classic Green Monster

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup almond milk (or soy milk)
  • 1 frozen banana (cut into pieces)
  • 2 handfuls organic spinach
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (1 tbsp ground flax)
  • 1 tbsp nut butter (I used unsalted crunchy almond butter)
  • 2 tpsp plain 0%fat greek yogurt (or any other yogurt can work too)
  • 1/4 cup uncooked oats (you can use old-fashioned, rolled, steel cut, etc.)
  • 5-6t Ice cubes

Directions:

  • First add the milk, chia seeds (or ground flax seeds), and nut butter in the blender and whirl away
  • Throw in the spinach and blend until all chunks are gone
  • Add the frozen banana pieces and uncooked oats and blend
  • Add greek yogurt and blend
  • Add 5-6 pieces of ice

    Felice xxxxxxxx

  2. I’ve recently started eating breakfast and I love all your recipes but i have a problem; I am student and i have to be in school at 7:45 am I usually eat breakfast around 7:00 am but around the time I’m leaving for school I always recieve a bathroom call so I was wondering if you can share some recipes that wouldn’t cause me to use the bathroom in the mornings please ^^
    xoxo Sumiya .

    • Sumiya, I would recommend waking up just 10-15 minutes earlier to avoid this problem. It is very healthy and natural for one to have to use the restroom in the morning almost immediately after breakfast. Also, If you are drinking coffee or tea in the morning, the laxative qualities in the caffeine will speed up your bowel movements.

  3. thank you!! unfortunately cant really get access to almound milk that easily living in the uk.. so im gonna use soy instead!!
    your lovely!!!!
    xxxx

  4. o sorry forgot to ask!! how filling is this recipe?? is this more filling or the overnight oats!?!?!?
    thanks x

  5. wow u r a ball of energy I’m soo lazy with everything! how do u get urself out of bed at 5am?!.. & why don’t u use regular milk? why soy or almond cuz I never bought those milks before & I’m new to most of your ingredients.

    • I use almond milk because I have very light intolerance to dairy (not completely lactose) and try to avoid it (I will be posting an article regarding my specific diet very soon). I also find that I enjoy the nuttiness of the almond milk!

  6. I really love this post because it has really showed me that you need to listen to your body. I always ignored it used to only eat 4 times a days thinking i was consuming less calories and i was actually feeling hungry a lot of times of the day. thank you for giving a recipe for feeling the whole.

  7. Eyed it and tried it!! Amazing recipe! i love that you provide substitutions to your recipes, because I didn’t have chia seeds at home. You look beautiful in your picture~

  8. I’ve been using this recipe for the last 3 days… and WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE! This gives me a great boost in energy, and leaves me feeling full 🙂 This is really perfect for me, because I am extremely anemic, and with the iron from the spinach and the Chia seeds, I really have noticed a difference!

I’ve also discovered that the ingredients are very affordable! I bought most of them in the “buy in bulk” section at whole foods, which is great because I can buy them in small amounts so that they will always be super fresh when I use them 🙂

Thanks so much for all the great ideas – I REALLY look forward to your larabar post, as I’ve been huge fan of those for many years (just a bit too pricey!)

    • Julia, it’s SO good to hear that you are enjoying this recipe! I have MANY MANY more versions of the green monster that I will be posting so I know that you will be enjoying them! I too have noticed a huge increase of energy, as well as clearer skin, and stronger hair and nails!

  9. i made the green monster…TWICE in one day! it is that good!! holly molly! so velvety! i love it Jane Lim!

  10. Hey i was wondering on the taste of this? it looks amazing but im afraid i might puke by the taste LOL! but i so want to try it!

    • Amru, it would indeed change the taste of the smoothie because the goat yogurt is what gives it its tangy taste, however it would still work. If you wanted to replace it and get a similar taste, I recommend using greek yogurt

      • Ooo I love greek yogurt.. Pitta bread dipped in YUM. Thank you..could you describe the taste please? (:

      • Amru, greek yogurt is very thick and creamy because of straining process that use. It has a slightly sour and tangy taste in comparison to traditional yogurt.

      • Opps I meant the taste over all of The Green Monster? Just realised there’s nothing like this in the UK (I’m British) loll can’t wait to share this with friends (: thank you.
